in Malta is considered the best diving in the Mediterranean. The Maltese islands are blessed with warm
temperatures, even in winter, clear, unpolluted seas, with
visibility underwater in excess of thirty metres. Hundreds of kilometres of coastline, many of which are still unexplored,
make the Maltese archipelago a favourite with adventurous
divers.

Malta Marine Foundation Proposed Wreck Hannibal & Baliena |
|
The Hannibal Project ~ PA 00597/03 |
|
On 31 January 2003
an application PA 00597/03 was submitted to MEPA. This
application was for the placing of the 23 meter long trawler
‘Hannibal’.
The Wreck is presently laid down in Grand Harbour. The intention
is to clean & prepare this trawler to be both environmentally
and diver friendly and we hope to place this trawler as a diving
attraction in a position where it could be easily reached by
divers.
Cassar Shipyard will carry out the whole task that is the
cleaning, preparing the wreck to comply with diver friendly
category and (already done) and sinking it upright in the
designated site. The Malta Maritime Authority has found no
objection to this project |

The Baliena Dredger |
|
The Baliena is an old dredger 28 meters long, 10 meters beam &
approximately 8 meters high from its flat keel to the upper most
part of its superstructure.
It is owned by Bezzina Shipyards & is currently laying listing
on its side, part underwater & part above water near the Marsa
power station. It is not easily visible from the shore and one
need to go by boat to view this vessel.
The proposed site to place this dredger to become an underwater
diving attraction is just off the shore close to the Exiles
Water polo pitch in St Julians Bay. The proposed site is also
the closest one to Grand Harbour thus minimizing transport
logistics. A car park and kitting up area is also available on
site making shore easy for the visiting divers as entry is
within easy walking distance.
